With around 161,000 inhabitants, Kutaisi is Georgia's third-largest city and the main town of the Imereti region. On Ukimerioni Hill above the Rioni stands Bagrati Cathedral, and 11 km outside the city lies Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.

KUT airport lies about 23 km west of the centre and is served from Germany only by Wizz Air (as of September 2026). Buses and trains run from there to Tbilisi and Batumi, and excursions lead to Prometheus Cave and Martvili Canyon.
