Rome suits you if you want to combine excavations, churches and museums and book timed-entry tickets in advance. The historic centre has been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1980. The World Heritage site covers just under 1,470 hectares. In 2024 the city counted 22.2 million guest arrivals (our own total from the city's tourism statistics), and in hotels guests stayed an average of 2.26 nights.

Several rules are new in 2026. Since 1 July the Pantheon costs €7 instead of €5, and at the Trevi Fountain you have paid €2 since 2 February for access to the basin. St Peter's Basilica has been opening daily from 07:00 to 20:00 since 1 June. And at the Colosseum, the name on the ticket can be changed only once for visits from 9 May 2026.

Rome is a poorer fit in July and August. Then the mean daily maximum at the Ciampino climate station is over 30 °C.

Getting there and from the airport into the city

In 2025 Rome was in 10th place among all foreign destinations from the main German airports, with around 1.3 million passengers. Almost all flew to Fiumicino, only 6,265 to Ciampino. Most Fiumicino passengers set off from Frankfurt and Munich. The strongest month was October, the weakest January (Federal Statistical Office, year 2025; breakdown by airport and month: our own evaluation).

Fiumicino (FCO): usually Terminal 1

According to the operator, Fiumicino airport lies about 32 km from the city centre. Flights from Germany usually arrive at Terminal 1, which serves domestic and Schengen flights; Terminal 3 is mainly for non-Schengen flights. The allocation can change, so check your boarding pass (as of September 2026).

Leonardo Express: non-stop to Termini in 32 minutes

The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes, every 15 minutes at peak times and otherwise every 30 (timetable as of June 2026). The station is signposted on the airport grounds. According to the Trenitalia timetable (valid until 12 December 2026), the last train from the airport leaves at 23:53. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays it does not run until 18 November, when 23:23 is the last departure.

The single journey costs €14.00 (fare since 28 October 2024, as of September 2026). Children under 4 travel free, and one child aged 4 to 11 per paying adult. You validate the paper ticket at the turnstile before boarding. The BIT city ticket is not valid on this train.

Tip

Leonardo Express: €40 for four instead of €56

From Fiumicino airport to Roma Termini one person pays €14 for the single journey. Four people pay €40 together with the shared Minigruppi ticket, bought in one transaction (fare since 28 October 2024, as of September 2026).

Regional train FL1: €8 to Ostiense and Tiburtina

The FL1 does not go to Termini, but does go, among other places, to Roma Ostiense with a change to metro B (Piramide) and to Roma Tiburtina, also with a metro B connection. On weekdays it runs every 15 minutes, at weekends and on public holidays every 30 (as of September 2026). To any station within the rail ring the journey costs €8.00 in 2nd class (fare since 28 October 2024).

Bus and taxi from Fiumicino

Buses to Termini are run by COTRAL, among others, from the T1 stop and by Terravision from stand 18, and there are also night buses. Bus fares are missing from the official sources evaluated, which is why they are not given here.

The taxi costs a flat €55.00 per vehicle to any address within the Aurelian Walls, surcharges included (as of July 2026). The journey takes about 40 to 50 minutes. The fixed price applies only to the direct journey without a detour; to other destinations the meter runs. Official taxis are white, with "TAXI" on the roof and the licence number on the front doors.

From Ciampino airport the Ciampino Airlink takes you to Termini for €2.70: first 10 minutes by bus without a stop to Ciampino station, then a regional train (as of September 2026). The bus leaves from bay 6 on the forecourt, according to the airport operator every 20 minutes. The taxi costs a flat €40.00 for destinations within the Aurelian Walls, and the journey takes about 30 minutes (as of July 2026).

Where to stay: the districts compared

Rome's 22 historic districts, the rioni, cover about 16 km² together. Except for Prati, all lie within the city walls.

Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine: €18 and named tickets

The 24-hour ticket for the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine costs €18.00, and €2.00 for EU citizens aged 18 to 24 (as of September 2026). At the Colosseum it is valid for one entry at the booked time, without the arena and for at most 75 minutes. You visit the Forum and Palatine within 24 hours before or after. The "Full Experience" with the arena costs €24.00 and is valid on two consecutive days.

Until 30 September the last entry is at 18:15, from 1 to 24 October at 17:30 and from 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027 at 15:30. On the first Sunday of the month admission is free, but then only with tickets from the ticket office on the same day. Getting there: metro B (Colosseo) or metro C (Colosseo-Fori Imperiali).

Caution

Colosseum: tickets are valid only in your name

All Colosseum tickets are in a named person's name, and you show ID at the entrance. Enter the name exactly as it appears on your ID. For visits from 9 May 2026 only one name change is allowed, and only in exceptional cases such as typing errors. The deadline ends at 24:00 on the seventh day before the visit. According to the operator, sales open 30 days beforehand, while the Full Experience Arena page gives 7 days instead (as of September 2026).

Vatican Museums: €20, free on the last Sunday

The Vatican Museums open Monday to Saturday from 08:00 to 20:00, last entry 18:00. They are closed on Sundays, except on the last Sunday of the month, when they are open from 09:00 to 14:00 with free admission. For the rest of 2026 the museums are also closed on 8, 25 and 26 December (as of September 2026).

Admission with the Sistine Chapel costs €20.00, or €25.00 with an online reservation; children under 7 are free (as of September 2026). The only official sales site online is tickets.museivaticani.va. Photos and videos are forbidden in the chapel. If you want to go on to St Peter's Basilica afterwards, do not check any luggage in at the museums. Getting there: metro A to Ottaviano or Cipro; bus 49 stops in front of the museums.

St Peter's Basilica and dome: new opening hours since June 2026

Admission is free. Since 1 June 2026 the basilica has been open daily from 07:00 to 20:00, last entry 19:15. Before that come the security checks in the right-hand semicircle of St Peter's Square, with queues at peak times. Here as in the museums the rule is: shoulders covered, no shorts or miniskirts. The basilica has no left-luggage facility.

551 steps lead to the top of the dome; with the lift up to the terrace, 320 remain. Until 25 October 2026 the dome is open from 07:00 to 18:00. For the preset two adults, the official booking page shows €34 via the stairs and €44 with the lift, in each case with the basilica. Per person that is €17 and €22 (our own calculation, as of September 2026). In the case of heart or breathing problems, dizziness and during pregnancy, the basilica advises against the climb.

Pantheon: €7 since July 2026

Since 1 July 2026 the Pantheon costs €7.00 instead of €5.00, €2.00 for 18- to 25-year-olds and nothing for under-18s. It is open daily from 09:00 to 19:00, last entry 18:30. Entry is in time slots with at most 1,200 people; tickets are available only through Musei Italiani or on site, with no "skip-the-line" option. A month's tickets go on sale in the middle of the previous month (as of September 2026). For Masses, for example on Sundays at 10:30, access is free.

Trevi Fountain: €2 for the area at the basin

Since 2 February 2026 tourists and everyone who does not live in Rome pay €2 for the area at the basin, also on the first Sunday of the month. It is open on Mondays and Fridays from 11:30, otherwise from 09:00, in each case until 22:00 with last entry at 21:00. Free admission applies to, among others, children under 6 years. Tickets are available in advance online via fontanaditrevi.roma.it; at the entrance you pay by card only.

Tip

Trevi Fountain: after 22:00 without a ticket

Since 2 February 2026 access to the basin of the Trevi Fountain in Rome has cost €2 for visitors from outside. From 22:00, when the area at the basin closes, the view of the fountain costs nothing.

Galleria Borghese: by reservation only

A reservation is compulsory for every ticket and costs a €2.00 fee; at the ticket office there are only a few last-minute tickets without a guarantee. Admission costs €16.00, and 18- to 25-year-olds pay €2.00 (as of September 2026). It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00. A visit lasts two hours, with at most 180 people per time slot. Bags must not be larger than 21 × 15 cm.

Castel Sant’Angelo

The former mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian lies between the Tiber and the Vatican. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:30, and since 1 July 2026 admission has cost €18.00 instead of €16.00. Until December 2026 the castle also opens on the first Monday of the month from 14:00 to 20:00, then for €5 and only with a ticket from the ticket office on site.

The baths, inaugurated in AD 216, have about 2 km of surviving underground passages. Admission costs €8.00, and the tickets are named (as of September 2026). In September it is open Tuesday to Sunday until 19:00; from 25 October the last entry is already at 15:30.

Via Appia Antica: World Heritage since 2024

The Via Appia has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since July 2024, as Italy's 60th site. The regional park around the ancient road covers about 4,580 hectares, is always open and charges no admission. You only have to pay for individual sites. Since 1 July 2026 the Mausoleum of Caecilia Metella and the Villa dei Quintili cost €8 each, and a ticket for all sites €12 for seven days.

Getting there is by metro B to Circo Massimo or metro C to Porta Metronia. Since 19 September 2026 a ZTL against through traffic has applied on the first section from Porta San Sebastiano on Saturdays and Sundays from 07:00 to 19:00, except in August. According to the city, it replaces the previous Sunday closure. Camera fines will come only after a test phase of at least 30 days.

  • Hotels: €4.00 (1 star) to €10.00 (5 stars), €7.50 with 4 stars
  • B&Bs and short-term lets: €6.00; guest houses and holiday flats €5.00 to €7.00 depending on category
  • Hostels: €3.50, camping €3.00

So two adults pay €45 for three nights in a 4-star hotel (our own calculation).

Practical information

Local transport: BIT, travel passes and Tap&Go

The BIT city ticket costs €1.50 and is valid for 100 minutes: any number of bus and tram journeys, but only one journey by metro or train (as of September 2026). The ROMA 24H, 48H and 72H travel passes have cost €8.50, €15.00 and €22.00 since 1 July 2025.

With Tap&Go you pay by contactless card, smartphone or smartwatch directly at the reader, on all ATAC buses and trams and at the metro turnstile. If you buy more than five BITs this way within 24 hours, ATAC charges the price of a ROMA 24H from the sixth onwards. Each person needs their own card for this. The last metro leaves the terminus stations around 23:30 from Sunday to Thursday and around 01:30 on Fridays and Saturdays (as of September 2026).

Roma Pass

The Roma Pass costs €38.00 for 48 hours with one free admission or €62.90 for 72 hours with two. Both include local transport on the city network and discounts on further admissions (as of September 2026). With the pass the 24-hour ticket for the Colosseum costs €11.50.

Money, time, emergencies

You pay in euros, and common credit cards are accepted. Italy is on the same time as Germany. The European emergency number 112 is free of charge, and you reach the medical emergency service on 118. Dinner is usually served from 19:30 to 23:00. The city's tourist hotline, 060608, can be reached daily from 09:00 to 19:00 (as of September 2026).

The current rules on entry, safety and health are set out by the German Foreign Office.

Entry requirements and safety

The rules that apply are published by the German Federal Foreign Office — always up to date there.

Who this is not for

  • If you cope badly with heat and can only travel in July or August: On 17.6 and 18.6 days a month respectively, the temperature then reaches 30 °C or more.
  • If you want to go spontaneously into the big sights: The Colosseum, Pantheon and Galleria Borghese admit visitors in time slots, the Galleria only by reservation.
  • If you want to avoid queues: There are queues at peak times at the security checks at St Peter's, and at the Trevi Fountain the city counted 5,000 visitors by 18:00 on the first day of the fee.
  • If you want to drive into the centre: Centro Storico and Trastevere are ZTL zones at certain times, Testaccio at weekend nights.
  • If you want dry weather in autumn: October and November each bring on average over 110 mm of rain on 8 to 10 days.
  • If you want to sightsee in shorts and sleeveless tops: The Vatican, St Peter's and the Pantheon require covered shoulders.
