With around 214,000 inhabitants (2023), Hurghada is the largest resort on Egypt's Red Sea coast and the seat of the Red Sea Governorate. To the north lie the old town of El Dahar and the tourist district of Sakkala with the marina, and to the south most of the resorts line up in New Hurghada.

From December to February the daily highs average 22 to 24 °C, and hardly any rain falls. The Giftun Islands lie off the coast, and it is around 295 km by road to Luxor.
