Crete is the largest island of Greece: about 260 km long, almost 8,000 km² in size, with more than 1,000 km of coastline and peaks up to 2,456 metres. In 2025, around 1.5 million passengers flew from the main German airports to Crete, 85% of them to Heraklion and 15% to Chania. Since 2025, six Minoan palace centres, including Knossos and Phaistos, have been on UNESCO's World Heritage List. It hardly rains in summer: from June to August, Heraklion receives an average of no more than 2.9 mm per month.
