At a glance

  • 463,438 passengers flew from Germany to North Macedonia in 2025, ranking 38th of 211 destination countries abroad; 417,004 of them went to Skopje (Federal Statistical Office, our own analysis).
  • Skopje airport: shuttle bus into the city 199 denars (as of September 2026), taxi at a fixed fare of 1,500 denars or €25 (price list since 9 February 2024).
  • Train Skopje–Bitola: three times a day in about 3 h 25 min, single 314 denars, return 502 denars (timetable and prices until 12 December 2026).
  • Samuel's Fortress in Ohrid: open from 1 October to 30 April from 9:00 to 15:30, closed on Mondays (as of September 2026).
  • Stobi: adults pay 300 denars from 1 April to 31 October and 250 denars from 1 November to 31 March; admission is free on the first Sunday of the month (as of July 2026).
  • Payment is in denars; in the countryside and in small shops or restaurants usually cash only (ADAC, as of September 2026).

North Macedonia suits you if you want to combine old monasteries, lakeshores and mountain national parks in a single trip. The Ohrid region has been a UNESCO natural heritage site since 1979 and a cultural heritage site since 1980. You won't need to change your watch: the time is the same as in Germany.

Some things are new in 2026. The shuttle bus from Skopje airport has stopped at the Hotel Continental since 29 March, instead of the former Kapitol stop. And from January to July 2026, around 28% more passengers flew from Germany to the country than in the same period of 2025 (our own analysis).

North Macedonia is less of a fit if you want the sea: the country is entirely surrounded by Serbia, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. In Skopje the mean daily maximum in July and August is 30.0 °C (average 1971–1990).

Advice from the German Federal Foreign Office

Getting there from Germany

In 2025, 463,438 passengers boarded flights to North Macedonia at the 22 main German airports, ranking 38th of 211 destination countries abroad. 417,004 flew to Skopje (SKP) and 46,434 to Ohrid (OHD); passengers changing planes abroad are not counted (Federal Statistical Office, year 2025; total and ranking: our own analysis). Most departed from Memmingen (88,656), Dortmund (87,389), Frankfurt (66,370) and Berlin Brandenburg (46,147). Flights to Ohrid left almost only from Memmingen and Dortmund.

From Skopje airport into the city

Skopje airport operates around the clock. A shuttle bus run by Erak Transporter goes into the city for 199 denars and stops at the Hotel Continental, the bus station and the Holiday Inn (as of September 2026). Departures follow the flights; on Mondays it leaves the airport nine times between 1:00 and 20:00 (summer timetable since 29 March 2026). The operator does not state a journey time.

Only the company “Airport Taxi” may pick up passengers at the airport. Its white cars, numbered 1 to 65, wait at the exit around the clock. According to the price list of 9 February 2024, the ride to Skopje (23 km) costs a flat 1,500 denars or €25, and the ride to Ohrid 7,800 denars or €130.

Tip

Skopje airport shuttle bus: 199 instead of 1,500 denars

From Skopje airport in North Macedonia, a shuttle bus runs into the city for 199 denars, while a taxi costs 1,500 denars (as of September 2026). The taxi price is a fixed fare according to the list of 9 February 2024. You buy the ticket at the airport counter from 8:00 to 20:00, and on the bus at night; you can pay in cash in denars, by card or online.

From Ohrid airport into the town

According to the operator, Ohrid airport is about 10 km from the centre. There is no regular bus; transfers are organised only by travel agencies for their guests and for seasonal charter flights. Six car hire companies are represented at the airport; it does not state taxi prices (as of September 2026).

According to the tourism agency, Skopje's landmark is the 15th-century stone bridge over the Vardar. The oldest walls of the Kale Fortress above the old town go back to the early 6th century. In the earthquake of 26 July 1963, 90% of the city's buildings were reduced to rubble. North-west of the city, the Treska in the Matka Canyon is dammed over a length of 5.9 km, according to the agency since 1938 as the oldest artificial lake on the Balkan Peninsula. There are also caves and several monasteries.

UNESCO counts Ohrid among the earliest settlements on the continent. The town has more than 800 Byzantine-style icons from the 11th to the late 14th century, and UNESCO lists Sv. Pantelejmon as the oldest monastery of the Slavs. The lake itself is about two to three million years old, and 17 of its fish species occur nowhere else.

Samuel's Fortress is open from 1 May to 30 September from 9:00 to 16:30 and from 1 October to 30 April until 15:30, and is never open on Mondays (as of September 2026). The museum websites give no admission prices for the fortress, the Icon Gallery or the pile dwellings in the Bay of Bones.

Galičica has been a national park since 1958 and lies between Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa; at Sv. Naum, 30 springs rise underwater and 15 on the shore. Pelister in the Baba Mountains became the country's first national park in 1948. The price list gives 100 denars per visitor and 150 denars for a car or motorbike, each for one calendar day (as of April 2026).

Mavrovo in the north-west has been a national park since 1949. Because of the risk of forest fires, you may enter its forests from 1 September to 31 October 2026 only after registering, at the Mavrovi Anovi information centre (daily 8:00 to 16:00) or by email. If you register by email, you pay a tourist tax of 100 denars per person per day in advance (as of 29 August 2026).

Stobi lies on the E-75, five minutes from Gradsko, and parking is free. From Skopje the site reckons on 55 minutes by car and 1 h 50 min by train. According to the ticket page it is open from 8:00 to 16:00, with last admission at 15:30 (as of July 2026); other parts of the website give other times.

Tip

Stobi: free admission on the first Sunday of the month

At the Stobi excavation site you pay no admission on the first Sunday of every month, nor on individual special days such as 18 April, 18 May and the third Saturday in October. Otherwise adults pay 300 denars from 1 April to 31 October and 250 denars from 1 November to 31 March (as of July 2026).

Two trains a day run to Gevgelija on the border with Greece (timetable 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026). Tickets are sold at the station counters and by the conductor; children aged 4 to 12 pay half.

Caution

Green Card only with the code MK, MKD or NMK

If you drive your own car to North Macedonia, check your Green Card: it is only valid if one of the codes MK, MKD or NMK appears on it. If they are missing, you need short-term liability insurance, which you take out at the border crossing (ADAC, as of September 2026).

Money and costs

You pay in Macedonian denars (MKD); according to ADAC, many places also accept euros. You can pay by card mainly in hotels and large supermarkets; in small shops, restaurants and in the countryside it is usually cash only (as of September 2026).
