Lisbon lies on the Tagus and rises from the Baixa, which was rebuilt on a grid after the 1755 earthquake, up to São Jorge Castle on the highest hill of the old town. Alfama and Mouraria, the districts where fado originated, lie on the castle hill.

LIS airport is about 7 km from the centre, and the Red Line of the metro stops at Terminal 1. Tram 15 runs to Belém, and the suburban train to Sintra and Cascais, each in about 40 minutes.
