With 713,058 passengers from Germany, Porto ranked 36th among destinations abroad in 2025 (cities and islands with several airports counted together); in Portugal only Lisbon was ahead. From Francisco Sá Carneiro airport, metro line E takes around 30 minutes to Trindade station in the centre. The historic centre with the Luís I Bridge has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, the Alto Douro wine region since 2001. On the other bank of the Douro, in Vila Nova de Gaia, port wine matures in the cellars. Porto and Gaia each charge an overnight levy of €3 per person and night (as of September 2026).
