Portugal’s second-largest city gets by with an urban area of just 41.42 km². Together with the Luís I Bridge and the Serra do Pilar monastery, its historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Port wine matures on the other bank of the Douro, in Vila Nova de Gaia. The city suits anyone who wants to combine the old town, wine cellars and a train excursion into the Douro Valley, whose wine region Alto Douro has also been a World Heritage Site since 2001.

Advice from the German Federal Foreign Office

Because of several forest fires and unusually high temperatures, the German Foreign Office says the forest-fire alert level applies to the whole of mainland Portugal, but not to Madeira and the Azores. This means that fire and smoking bans apply, campfires and fireworks are prohibited, and you may not enter certain wooded areas. Follow the instructions of the fire brigade and the authorities; the Fogos map shows current fires.

AI-generated summary of the German Federal Foreign Office’s travel and safety advice for Portugal, version of 29 July 2026. It simplifies and may be incomplete: before you travel, also read the Foreign Office’s original text (in German).

Since 7 September 2026, the airport line E of the Metro has run every 15 minutes from 7:00 to 20:00. Since 20 April the metroBus has run on regular service between Casa da Música and Praça do Império, and since June the Livraria Lello has had an extension by Álvaro Siza. Since 21 August, Vila Nova de Gaia has charged €3 per person and night like Porto, and the Porto.CARD tourist card has been temporarily unavailable since July.

Between October and January Porto is wet: at the airport an average of 149 to 166 mm of rain falls per month then (normals 1991–2020). Anyone who has difficulty walking must expect slopes. From the bank in Gaia to Jardim do Morro alone it is almost 60 metres of climb (our own calculation).

Getting there and from the airport into town

With 713,058 passengers from Germany, Porto ranked 36th among foreign destinations in 2025, counted at the main German airports (cities and islands with several airports added together). Among Portuguese destinations only Lisbon ranked higher. Most passengers departed from Frankfurt (187,145) and Munich (111,877), July was the strongest month and January the weakest (Federal Statistical Office; everything except rank and total: our own analysis).

Francisco Sá Carneiro airport (OPO)

According to Visit Porto, the city’s tourism portal, the airport is 11 km from the centre; in 2025 it handled just under 16.9 million passengers according to VINCI Airports. Metro line E, buses 601, 602 and 604, taxis and ride-hailing services such as Uber, Bolt and Free Now run into the city (as of September 2026).

Metro line E: every 15 minutes since September

On the violet line E it takes about 30 minutes to Trindade according to Visit Porto. Since 7 September 2026 it has run daily every 15 minutes from 7:00 to 20:00, every 20 minutes until 23:00, and every 30 minutes otherwise. By day every second train ends at Trindade, and the others continue via Campanhã to Estádio do Dragão. At the airport the first train leaves at 6:06 Monday to Friday, at 5:58 on Saturdays and at 5:57 on Sundays and public holidays, and the last one daily at 0:42.

Payment is under the Andante zone fare. According to the network map, Aeroporto station is in the same zone as Pedras Rubras, for which Metro do Porto gives a Z4 from Trindade. For the journey into the centre you therefore need a Z4 for €2.30, valid for 75 minutes (our own deduction). The first time, the paper card Andante Azul for €0.60 comes on top (fare from 1 January 2026). You validate at the boarding station, at the earliest 10 minutes before the journey, and at every change (as of September 2026).

Tip

Metro E: each person needs their own Andante card

From Porto airport, Metro line E has run into the centre every 15 minutes by day since 7 September 2026, reaching Trindade in about 30 minutes. If there are two of you, you need two Andante cards at €0.60 each; two people travelling on one card is not allowed (fare from 1 January 2026).

City buses and night bus

Routes 601 and 602 to Cordoaria run with changing times through the year, roughly from 5:30 to 24:00 and about every 25 minutes. The 604 runs about from 6:00 to 21:00 every half hour to Hospital São João, and at night the 3M runs from 0:30 to 5:30 hourly to Avenida dos Aliados. According to Visit Porto the journey takes around 45 minutes. You pay the driver €2.50 for a single journey, in cash, by MB WAY or contactless (as of September 2026).

Taxis and ride-hailing

According to Visit Porto the journey into the centre takes around 20 minutes and costs on average €20 to €25; the sources evaluated give no official fixed price (as of September 2026). The taxi rank is directly in front of the arrivals area. According to the airport operator ANA you pay tolls extra if the route runs over a toll road, plus a surcharge for luggage over 55 × 35 × 20 cm. For more than four passengers you order a larger car by phone (both as of August 2026).

Where to stay: the districts compared

Visit Porto divides the city into eight tourist districts. Here are six areas compared:

Sights: opening times, prices and rules in 2026

World Heritage: old town, Luís I Bridge, Serra do Pilar

The 1996 World Heritage Site covers the old town inside the Fernandine Wall, which was finished in 1376. It also contains later buildings, such as São Bento station (1900–1916) and the Stock Exchange Palace (1842–1910). The bridge was designed by Eiffel’s pupil Théophile Seyrig and opened in 1886. It is 395 m long and has two iron decks one above the other; on the upper one Metro line D crosses over to Gaia.

São Bento station: around 20,000 tiles

The station was built where the monastery of São Bento de Avé-Maria used to stand. In the entrance hall, around 20,000 tiles painted by Jorge Colaço show scenes from the history of Portugal and of transport. It is open daily from 6:30 to 1:00 (as of September 2026), and Metro line D has a station here.

Cathedral (Sé): €4 with cloister and tower

The Romanesque core dates from the 12th and 13th centuries, the Gothic cloister from the 14th century. From April to October it is open daily from 9:00 to 18:30, from November to March until 17:30; the tower closes half an hour earlier in each case. Cathedral, cloister, museum and tower cost €4 together according to Visit Porto, and children under 10 pay nothing (as of September 2026).

Torre dos Clérigos: 225 steps for €10

Nicolau Nasoni designed the 75 m tower in 1753, and it was finished in July 1763. It is 225 steps to the top. The tower is open every day, usually from 9:00 to 19:00, and until 23:00 in the Easter, summer and Christmas periods. Admission is until half an hour before closing. Tower and museum cost €10, pupils and students aged 11 to 18 pay €7, and children up to 10 pay nothing (as of September 2026).

Livraria Lello: entry only with a ticket voucher

The bookshop has occupied its historic building with its staircase and stained-glass ceiling since 1906, and since 24 June 2026 it has been complemented by an extension by Álvaro Siza. Even if you only want to buy a book, you need a ticket voucher for €15.95. It is open daily from 9:00 to 19:30, and closed on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 1 May, 24 June and 25 December. You can pay in cash, just not when buying a ticket in the queue (as of September 2026).

Tip

Livraria Lello: book a time, have the amount credited against a book

You book the ticket voucher for €15.95 online for a fixed time, and you are admitted up to 60 minutes afterwards. If you buy a book from the “Edições Livraria Lello” series, the amount is credited. Children up to and including age 3 are free (as of September 2026).

Stock Exchange Palace: guided tour only

You can see the Palácio da Bolsa only on a compulsory 30-minute guided tour in English, French, Portuguese or Spanish; the language depends on the order of arrival. It is open from 9:00 to 18:30, admission costs €14, concessions €9.50, and children up to 12 accompanied by adults are free (as of September 2026).

Mercado do Bolhão: market with Metro access

Over 70 traders sell in the renovated market, 38 shops are on the outside of the building, and on the upper floor there is room for 10 restaurants. A direct entrance leads in from Bolhão Metro station. It is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 20:00, on Saturdays until 18:00, and closed on Sundays (as of September 2026).

Casa da Música and Serralves

You can visit the Casa da Música by Rem Koolhaas only on a guided tour, about an hour for €12. You book English tours online, while tours in four other languages at 11:00 and 15:00 are available only at the ticket desk (as of September 2026).

Serralves with the Museum of Contemporary Art, villa and park with a treetop walk costs €24, the park alone €15; children under 12 are free. The villa stays closed from 21 September to 16 October 2026. The metroBus stops at Serralves station. From October to March it is open Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00, at weekends and on public holidays until 19:00. From April to September Serralves closes an hour later in each case (as of September 2026).

Port wine cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia

Port wine matures in Gaia’s warehouses, many of them from the 17th and 18th centuries; it used to arrive on rabelo boats from the Douro Valley. At Sandeman, founded in 1790, the basic tour costs €23 for 50 minutes with three ports. According to the city of Gaia, Sandeman runs tours from March to October from 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00. From November to February the hours are 9:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:30. Taylor’s shows its cellars, around 300 years old, daily from 10:00 to 18:15, with an audio guide also in German and three wines (as of September 2026).

Cable car in Gaia: €7 one way

The cable car climbs 600 m in about five minutes from the bank in Gaia up to Jardim do Morro, where the Metro stops. One way costs €7, return €10, and children aged 5 to 12 pay half. Until 24 October it runs daily from 10:00 to 19:00, from 25 October to 31 December until 18:00, and not on 25 December (as of September 2026).

Historic tram: Line 1 on the Douro

From Infante at Ribeira, Line 1 follows the Douro to Passeio Alegre in Foz, in about 23 minutes according to the timetable. It runs to Passeio Alegre daily about every 20 minutes, from Infante from 9:00 to 19:40 and back from Passeio Alegre from 9:30 to 20:10. With the winter timetable from 25 October 2026, the last tram in both directions runs an hour earlier. Lines 18 and 22 run daily from 9:15 to 19:45 about every 30 minutes (as of September 2026).

Tip

Tram: two journeys for €8 instead of €12

A ride on the historic tram costs €6, and tickets are sold only on board. Anyone who travels there and back on the same day pays €8 instead of €12 with the ticket for two journeys (our own calculation, as of September 2026).

Day trip into the Douro Valley by train

The Alto Douro wine region has been a World Heritage Site since 2001, and its terraced vineyards cover around 24,600 hectares. The Douro line reached Pinhão in 1880, and today it measures 172 km to the terminus at Pocinho, mostly close to the river. The MiraDouro runs there daily in both directions, and its Schindler carriages from the late 1940s have panoramic windows that open. The single fare from Campanhã at full price costs €10.70 to Régua and €14.60 to Pocinho (as of September 2026).

According to the timetable from 5 August 2026, direct InterRegional trains to Pinhão leave Porto Campanhã, not São Bento, at 7:30, 9:30, 13:30 and 17:30. They take 2 hours 15 to 21 minutes (our own calculation). In Pinhão station, 24 tile pictures from an order of 1937 show viticulture and the landscape on the Douro. From June to October a Historic Train also runs between Régua and Tua, for the last time in 2026 on 18 October.

Tip

Train into the Douro Valley: leave at 7:30, back at 18:11

Anyone who wants to see the Douro Valley in a day takes the 7:30 train from Porto Campanhã, which reaches Pinhão at 9:51. The last direct train back leaves Pinhão at 18:11 and reaches Campanhã at 20:30. That leaves a good eight hours in the valley (our own calculation, timetable from 5 August 2026).

Tourist tax: €3 each in Porto and Gaia

In Porto you have paid €3 per person for each night since 1 December 2024. It stops at €21, which corresponds to seven nights in a row. Exempt are, among others, children up to and including age 12 and, with proof, stays for medical treatment and people with a disability of at least 60 per cent. Gaia has also charged €3 per night since 21 August 2026, but only from age 16 and for at most 7 nights in a row. A couple pays €24 in Porto for four nights and €42 for ten nights (our own calculation).

Practical information

Local transport: Andante zones and day tickets

Metro, STCP buses and CP suburban trains are charged under the Andante fare. You pay by distance; whether you take the Metro or a bus and how often you change does not matter. A Z2 covers the zone of the first validation and all neighbouring zones, and single journeys cost €1.40 with Z2, €1.85 with Z3 and €2.30 with Z4 (fare from 1 January 2026). When you top up ten identical tickets, an eleventh is included.

The Andante 24 day ticket costs €5.35 for Z2 and €8.55 for Z4, and the Andante Tour costs €7.75 for 24 hours and €16.55 for 72 hours (fare from 1 January 2026). According to TMP, the Andante Tour is valid without zone limits, but neither on the Funicular dos Guindais nor on the historic tram (as of March 2023).

Caution

Andante: two Z2 are not a Z4

Two Z2 on the card do not make a Z4. As long as the hour of the first Z2 is running, the reader does not deduct the second. If you travel beyond the zones of the first one in this time, you are travelling without a valid ticket for the rest of the route. According to the Metro, the only remedy is then a second card with its own Z2; it is simpler to take a Z4 straight away (as of September 2026).

metroBus and Porto.CARD

Since 20 April 2026 the metroBus has run on regular service from Casa da Música to Praça do Império, every 10 to 15 minutes from 6:30 to 22:00. A journey costs one Z2 (€1.40), and you validate on the platform, not on the bus. According to the provider, the Porto.CARD tourist card has been temporarily unavailable to buy since the beginning of July 2026 (as of September 2026).

Money, time, emergencies

You pay in euros, and you can withdraw cash around the clock at ATMs of the MB (Multibanco) and ATM networks. Although the restaurant bill already includes service, people usually leave a 5 to 10 per cent tip. In Porto it is an hour earlier than in Germany all year round (our own deduction). You dial the emergency number 112 free of charge, and the health hotline SNS 24 has the number 808 24 24 24 (as of September 2026).

Current information on entry, safety and health is available from the German Foreign Office.

The rules that apply are published by the German Federal Foreign Office — always up to date there.
