Istanbul lies on two continents, with the Bosphorus separating the European half of the city from the Asian half. In 2025, almost 19 million foreign visitors entered via Istanbul's airports and ports; German nationals, with a good 1.5 million entries, were the second-largest group. From the main German airports, around 2.95 million passengers flew to Istanbul in 2025, most of them to Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side. Four historic areas of the city have been on UNESCO's World Heritage List since 1985.
