Fuerteventura suits you if in winter you want sun, long sandy beaches and protected nature. At the weather station at the airport the mean daily maximum in January is 20.6 °C, and the sun shines there for 2,836 hours a year (AEMET, 1981–2010). According to UNESCO, Fuerteventura is the oldest and second-largest of the Canary Islands, and it has been a biosphere reserve since 2009.

Advice from the German Federal Foreign Office

The German Federal Foreign Office changed its travel and safety advice for Spain on 12 October 2026. The current version is on its website.

New in 2026 is line 3 Exprés: since 8 June, electric buses have run between Puerto del Rosario, the airport and Caleta de Fuste. On 25 September the island government, the Cabildo, announced more checks on the Isla de Lobos, which may be entered only with a permit.

The island suits you less if you expect warm sea water in winter or want to get far without a car. It is not empty in winter: in December 2024, according to the Cabildo, hotels were more than 96% occupied.

Getting there and from the airport to the towns

In 2025 Fuerteventura ranked 33rd among foreign destinations from the main German airports. 783,746 passengers from Germany had the island as their last known destination; passengers changing planes for another final destination are not counted. Most boarded in Düsseldorf (153,750) and Frankfurt (131,584). March was the strongest month, and 54.8% flew in the months January to March and October to December (Federal Statistical Office; months and airports: own analysis).

Airport (FUE): 5 km outside Puerto del Rosario

The airport is in El Matorral, about 5 km from the island capital Puerto del Rosario, and counted almost 6.9 million passengers in 2025. Condor opened the first European connection in 1973, direct between Düsseldorf and Puerto del Rosario. Buses stop on level 0 on the departures side, and the taxi rank is on level 0 at arrivals. Nine car hire companies also have their desks there (as of September 2026).

Buses from the airport: lines 3, 10 and 16

Three lines of the Tiadhe intercity bus stop at the airport (Aena, as of September 2026). Line 3 goes to Puerto del Rosario, Caleta de Fuste and Las Salinas, and line 10 to Puerto del Rosario and Morro Jable. Line 16 connects the airport with Puerto del Rosario and Gran Tarajal. The timetables give only departures at the terminal stops, neither times at the airport nor journey times.

Line 3 and 3 Exprés: to Caleta de Fuste

Caleta de Fuste is 8 km or 10 minutes from the airport (tourism office, as of December 2025). Line 3 costs €1.45 from Puerto del Rosario to there; the timetable does not give the fare from the airport. Monday to Saturday it runs 48 times in each direction, in the daytime mostly two to four times an hour (own count). The last journey with an airport stop leaves Puerto del Rosario daily at 23:00. In the opposite direction it is 23:15 from Las Salinas Monday to Saturday and 22:00 on Sundays and public holidays (as of September 2026).

Since 8 June 2026, line 3 Exprés, with three electric buses, has added to the frequency. It skips some of the stops but serves the airport and Caleta de Fuste.

Line 10: to Costa Calma and Morro Jable

Line 10 connects Puerto del Rosario with Morro Jable and stops at the airport, Caleta de Fuste, Gran Tarajal and Costa Calma, among others. The whole route costs €9.70. From Puerto del Rosario it runs Monday to Saturday at 9:00, 14:00, 16:30, 18:00, 19:30 and 20:30, and Monday to Friday except public holidays also at 16:00. On Sundays and public holidays there are seven journeys from 11:30 to 20:30, and going back from Morro Jable the last bus leaves daily at 21:30 (as of September 2026).

To Corralejo and El Cotillo: change at Puerto del Rosario

There is no regular direct bus from the airport to Corralejo. You take line 3 or 10 to Puerto del Rosario and change to line 6 at the bus station. It costs €3.40 and runs 38 or 39 times in each direction Monday to Friday and 33 or 34 times on Saturdays. From Puerto del Rosario it goes Monday to Friday from 6:00 and Saturdays from 6:30, in each case until 23:00, in the daytime mostly every half hour (own count, as of September 2026). Only one journey stops at the airport: Monday to Friday at 7:00 from Corralejo, for €3.90.

To El Cotillo, line 8 runs from Corralejo for €3.10, 16 to 18 times a day in each direction. From Puerto del Rosario there is line 7 for €4.35, which runs the whole route six to eight times a day in each direction (own count, as of September 2026).

Tickets: cash or with a discount card

Tiadhe names two ways: cash to the driver or with the Bono BtF discount card (see Costs). When paying cash, the banknote may be worth at most five times the fare and never more than €50. The Cabildo approves the fares anew every year (as of March 2025).

Taxi: guide prices from the tourism office

The island's tourism office gives guide prices for taxis from the airport. To Corralejo (39 km, 40 minutes) it is €40 to €50, to Costa Calma (65 km, 60 minutes) €55 to €65. To Morro Jable (84 km) the office reckons €85 to €95 (as of December 2025).

Caution

Taxi only at the signposted rank

Aena recommends boarding at the airport only at the signposted taxi rank in front of the terminal and avoiding drivers who approach you elsewhere. For a later complaint you need the receipt, so ask for it. Taxi information: +34 828 111 999 (as of September 2026).

Car hire: lay-bys and tracks

The tourism office considers a hire car the best way to get to know the island and advises booking it early for the high season (as of December 2025). The FV-1 to Corralejo crosses the dunes natural park; you enter the park only on foot, and the car stays in a lay-by. In the Betancuria Rural Park, driving off the paths is forbidden; in the Jandía Natural Park the Cabildo asks people to use only approved tracks with cars and bikes (Cabildo leaflets, 2015).

Sights: times, prices and rules in 2026

The rules for the protected areas here mostly come from Cabildo leaflets of 2015. The Cabildo is currently working on new plans for the Corralejo, Jandía and Lobos natural parks and the Betancuria Rural Park (as of August 2026).

Corralejo Natural Park: the largest dune field in the Canary Islands

No dune field in the Canary Islands is bigger than the one at Corralejo. The natural park covers 2,338.7 ha, and the wind pushes the sea sand inland as far as Montaña Roja (312 m). You walk only on the marked paths and on the beach; camping, fires and wind-shelter walls made of stones are forbidden. The International Kite Festival has been held in the dunes since 1987, in 2026 from 9 to 15 November (as of September 2026).

Isla de Lobos: only with a permit

The Isla de Lobos lies 2 km off Fuerteventura and has been a natural park as a whole since 1982; there are no roads. You can reach it only by boat from Corralejo, and the crossing takes 15 to 20 minutes. A circular path leads 7 km from the jetty to the Martiño lighthouse and back via the Puertito.

Since 15 January 2019, nobody may go onto the island without a permit. It costs nothing, is valid only for you personally, is independent of the boat ticket and can be checked at any time. You apply for it on lobospass.com, the Cabildo's web app. There are two time slots, 10:00 to 14:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, with at most 200 places each (as of 26 September 2026). On 25 September 2026 the Cabildo announced it would step up checks with a new service.

According to the leaflet, you go ashore only at the jetty and in the Puertito, and pets are forbidden. You leave the laid-out paths neither on foot nor by bike. Fires, noise, feeding animals and collecting plants, shells or sand are prohibited (as of 26 September 2026).

From October to June, for example, Nortour sails daily from Corralejo at 10:00, 11:15, 13:00 and 15:30, returning at 10:25, 11:40, 14:20 and 17:00. The round trip costs €17, and children from 4 to 11 years pay €11 (as of July 2026).

Tip

Apply for the Lobos permit yourself

You can enter the Isla de Lobos off Fuerteventura only with a permit: free on lobospass.com, no earlier than five days in advance, for at most three people per application (as of September 2026). If you let the boat operator Nortour submit the application, it costs €2 extra (as of July 2026). For each time slot, 10:00 to 14:00 or 14:00 to 18:00, there are at most 200 places.

Betancuria: first capital of the Canary Islands

Betancuria was founded in 1404 in a valley far from the coast, protected from pirates; its founder was Jean de Bethencourt, a knight from Normandy. The tourism office calls the town the first capital of the island and of the Canary Islands. It has been protected as a historic ensemble since 1979; worth seeing are, for example, the churches of Santa María and La Concepción.

The Museo Arqueológico in the town opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00, and admission is free (as of September 2026). The Morro Velosa viewpoint is temporarily closed (as of 26 September 2026). In August 2026 the Cabildo put out a tender to set up a visitor centre there about the island's arid regions.

Jandía Natural Park and Cofete beach

The Jandía Natural Park in the south covers 14,318.5 ha; it is home to the Pico de la Zarza, at 807 m the island's highest mountain. The natural park's visitor centre in the lighthouse at Punta de Jandía is temporarily closed because of building work (as of 26 September 2026).

Cofete beach is 12 km long and hardly built on; the access road is not paved: you get there by a track from Morro Jable. According to the tourism office, you should bring water, food and sun protection. When the sea is rough, it advises against swimming because of the strong surf (as of December 2025).

Caution

Track to Cofete: better with high ground clearance or four-wheel drive

The track to Cofete runs over earth and stones, and some sections are tricky. The tourism office recommends the track only for high-clearance cars or four-wheel-drive vehicles (as of December 2025). Storms damaged it in November 2025, and line 111 was out of service until December.

Tip

Cofete by bus: line 111 for €8.70

Line 111 runs daily at 10:00 and 14:15 from Morro Jable via Cofete to the lighthouse at Punta de Jandía, and the ticket costs €8.70 (as of September 2026). You cannot reserve. The return from the lighthouse is at 12:15 and 16:15, with a stop in Cofete.

Ajuy caves: the oldest rock in the Canary Islands

Older than anywhere else in the Canary Islands is the rock exposed in the Ajuy caves: marine deposits from the Cretaceous, 100 to 150 million years old. You walk there over a petrified dune, past old lime kilns. Camping, climbing and fires are forbidden in the natural monument.

Museums and lighthouses

The Museo de las Salinas del Carmen in the municipality of Antigua opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00, and non-residents pay €6. The La Alcogida open-air museum in Tefía, with seven traditional buildings, opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00, and non-residents pay €5. Admission is free at the La Entallada lighthouse of 1954, the point in the Canary Islands closest to Africa at around 100 km. It opens Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 (as of September 2026). The fishing museum at Faro del Tostón near El Cotillo is temporarily closed because of building work (as of 26 September 2026).

From November to March the mean high is 20.6 to 24.0 °C, and at night 14.7 to 17.7 °C. Rain then falls on 1.9 to 3.2 days a month, most in December, which with 186 hours also has the least sun. The official sources reviewed give no values for Corralejo, Costa Calma or Morro Jable, and no wind values.

For Fuerteventura itself, Puertos del Estado gives no value but averages the Canary Islands sea region from four buoys off Gran Canaria and Tenerife. In this average the water was 19.3 to 20.0 °C from January to April in 2015 to 2024 (own analysis of the official daily values). Whether it is warmer or colder on Fuerteventura's beaches is not documented.

Tourist tax: none in force

According to the official sources reviewed, a tourist tax or a tax on overnight stays is not in force on Fuerteventura (as of 26 September 2026). The Cabildo is working on an eco-levy for Lobos, Corralejo, Cofete and Ajuy, according to a report from June 2025. Nothing has so far been charged for Lobos, and the permit is free (as of 27 September 2026).

Tip

Bono BtF: 10% discount for €5

The Bono BtF discount card costs €5 once; you buy and top it up on the bus. If you do not live on Fuerteventura, you travel 10% cheaper with it (as of March 2025). From Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable you save €0.97 per journey, and from the sixth journey the card has paid for itself (own calculation).

Practical information

Money, time, electricity, emergency number

The currency is the euro, cards such as Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, in some places only from about €10. Tipping is voluntary; in restaurants, hotels and taxis 5 to 10% is usual (as of September 2026). On Fuerteventura it is one hour earlier than in Germany all year round. The sockets have round contacts to the European standard, 220 V and 50 Hz. You can reach the emergency number free of charge EU-wide on 112.

Customs: allowances as outside the EU

German customs lists the Canary Islands as a special fiscal territory. On your return the same allowances therefore apply as after trips from non-EU countries, for example 200 cigarettes, 1 litre of spirits over 22% and 4 litres of still wine. The amounts for tobacco and alcohol apply only from the age of 17. For air travellers, other goods up to €430 are duty-free, for children under 15 up to €175 (as of September 2026).

What applies to entry, safety and health is on the Spain page of the German Foreign Office, which also covers the Canary Islands.

Entry requirements and safety

The rules that apply are published by the German Federal Foreign Office — always up to date there.

  • If you want to get far without a car: Line 10 runs six to seven times a day from Puerto del Rosario to Morro Jable, and the bus to Cofete twice.
  • If you land late and want to go south: The last line 10 leaves Puerto del Rosario at 20:30 (as of September 2026). A taxi to Morro Jable costs about €85 to €95 (as of December 2025).
  • If you want to go to Lobos on the spur of the moment: The permit is available no earlier than five days in advance, and in a spot check on 27 September 2026 the next day's morning was already fully booked.
  • If you want to have the island to yourself in winter: In December 2024 hotels were more than 96% occupied.
  • If you plan on viewpoints and visitor centres: The Mirador Morro Velosa, the Jandía visitor centre and the fishing museum at Faro del Tostón are temporarily closed (as of 26 September 2026).
