Málaga suits you if you want to combine the old town, the beach and day trips in one holiday. The C1 train runs from the airport into the centre and on via Torremolinos and Benalmádena to Fuengirola. The city has 14 km of coastline with city beaches, and the airport gets 2,905 hours of sunshine a year (AEMET, mean 1981–2010).

Advice from the German Federal Foreign Office

The German Federal Foreign Office changed its travel and safety advice for Spain on 12 October 2026. The current version is on its website.

Original text from the German Federal Foreign Office (in German) (opens in a new tab)

The rules of use for the Caminito del Rey were changed in 2026 by a decree of 6 May; new, for example, is the requirement to keep to the right on the walkways. As before, children under 8 are not allowed on the path, and you must be at the entrance 30 minutes before your entry time. From Germany, 4.9% more passengers flew to Málaga from January to July 2026 than in the same period of the previous year (own analysis of Destatis data).

The Costa del Sol suits you less if you expect beach weather in winter: from December to February the mean daily high is between 16.8 and 17.7 °C. In July and August it is a good 30 °C, and even the mean daily low stays above 20 °C.

Getting there and from the airport into the city

In 2025, Málaga ranked 15th among all international destinations from the main German airports, with 1,044,149 passengers (cities and islands with several airports counted together). In Spain, only Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona and Madrid were ahead. Most passengers departed from Berlin-Brandenburg, Frankfurt and Munich; July was the busiest month and January the quietest (Federal Statistical Office, year 2025; rank within Spain, departure airports and months: own analysis).

Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP)

According to the operator Aena, it is 8 km to the city centre. In 2025 the airport handled 26.8 million passengers according to provisional statistics; in Spain only Madrid, Barcelona and Palma had more.

C1 train: frequency, journey times and stops

Renfe's local line C1 (Cercanías) stops at the airport at Aeropuerto station. Towards the centre it is followed by Guadalhorce, Victoria Kent and María Zambrano, with a change to the AVE, and the terminus is Málaga-Centro Alameda. In the other direction it runs via Torremolinos and Benalmádena to Fuengirola (network map as of April 2025).

According to Aena, it takes 12 minutes to the centre and 34 minutes to Fuengirola (as of September 2026). The Renfe timetable shows the same journey times. During the day the C1 usually runs every 20 minutes, early in the morning and late in the evening every 30 to 35 minutes, and on Saturday and Sunday mornings sometimes only every 40 minutes.

The timetable data show the first train from the airport to the centre every day at 06:44 and the last ones at night at 00:24 and 00:54. Towards Fuengirola the first leaves at 05:32 and the last at 23:42. From Málaga-Centro Alameda the first train to the airport starts at 05:20 and the last at 23:30 (own analysis of Renfe data, as of 24 September 2026).

With Cronos you pay contactless by bank card or phone at the turnstile; from the fifth journey in the same calendar month with the same card it costs 40% less (as of September 2026). The Renfe sources we analysed do not give a clear fare for airport to centre.

Caution

Cronos: use the turnstile at your destination too

If you pay with Cronos, you must also validate at the turnstile or validator at the destination station. Otherwise Renfe charges the maximum fare for all zones (as of September 2026).

Express bus A: €4 to Paseo del Parque

The express line A of the city's EMT leaves from level 0 (arrivals), stops at Alameda Principal among other places and ends at Paseo del Parque. A journey costs €4, also with the combined ticket, and luggage is free; on the bus you pay in cash or with Visa and Mastercard (as of September 2026). From the airport the first bus leaves at 07:00 and the last on weekdays at 01:15. From Paseo del Parque the first towards the airport starts at 06:25 and the last on weekdays at 00:35. On weekdays a bus usually comes every 25 minutes, and the journey then takes 26 to 41 minutes, at weekends 24 to 33 (own analysis of the city's timetable data, as of 26 September 2026).

Intercity buses to Marbella, Estepona and Nerja

Intercity buses also leave from level 0: Avanzabús to Marbella bus station and to Estepona, Alsa to Nerja, and Flixbus daily to Córdoba, Évora and Lisbon (as of September 2026).

Taxi: minimum fare from €17.37

According to Aena, taxis from the airport on weekdays from Monday to Friday between 06:00 and 22:00 are charged Tariff 4, with a minimum of €17.37 and €1.00 per kilometre. Tariff 5, which applies on weekdays from 00:00 to 06:00 and at weekends during the day, among other times, costs at least €21.72. Tariff 9 applies at weekends at night, among other times, and costs at least €24.93 (as of September 2026). For each item of luggage in the boot there is an extra €0.56, from 00:00 to 06:00 a €2.15 night supplement, and on journeys to the airport a €6.27 surcharge.

Car hire: Terminal 2, tolls and low-emission zone

The car hire desks, including Avis, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt, are in Terminal 2 on the lower level. You can hire from the age of 18 with a credit card, and you often need to have held your driving licence for one to two years. The alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l of blood, and children under 135 cm travel in the back in an approved child seat (as of September 2026).

The AP-7 (Autopista del Sol) costs €5.70 for cars at the main Calahonda toll plaza, and €9.25 from June to September and around Easter (2026 rates). For toll roads in Spain there is usually a toll-free alternative. In the centre of Málaga a low-emission zone covering 404 hectares with number plate recognition applies. Vehicles with the DGT classification CERO, ECO or C may always enter; for the others, graduated restrictions apply depending on classification and place of residence (as of September 2026).

Alcazaba and Castillo de Gibralfaro: €10 for both

The Alcazaba is first documented as a fortress in 755. The Castillo de Gibralfaro, 132 m above sea level, was built in the 14th century. The Roman Theatre on the western slope of Gibralfaro hill dates from the 1st century. The Torre Blanca of the Gibralfaro wall is considered the largest surviving outlying tower in Al-Andalus.

From 1 April to 31 October both are open from 09:00 to 20:00, otherwise until 18:00; last entry is one hour before closing. The Alcazaba costs €7.00, with Gibralfaro €10.00, concessions €3.00 and €5.00 (as of September 2026). Concessions are paid by EU citizens aged 65 and over and EU students, among others; children under 6 go free.

Tip

Free on Sundays: Alcazaba and Gibralfaro from 14:00

In Málaga you can currently enter the Alcazaba and the Castillo de Gibralfaro free of charge every Sunday from 14:00 (as of September 2026). The Museo Picasso is free on Sundays in the last two opening hours, and the Museo de Málaga is always free for EU citizens.

Museo Picasso Málaga: €13, free on Sundays before closing

The museum in the Palacio de Buenavista (Calle San Agustín 8) opened on 27 October 2003. Admission costs €13, concessions €11, and it is free for under-17s, among others; the audio guide as a web app is included (as of September 2026). It is open daily from 10:00, until 20:00 in July and August, until 18:00 from November to February, and otherwise until 19:00. Admission is free on Sundays in the two hours before closing and on 28 February, 18 May, 27 September and 27 October.

Cathedral: €10 with audio guide in German

Admission costs €10 with an audio guide in ten languages, including German, and €15 with a 360-degree VR experience (as of September 2026). Children under 13, people with disabilities and residents of Málaga go free, and everyone is admitted free daily from 08:30 to 09:00. Appropriate clothing is required inside.

From 1 June to 25 October it is open Monday to Friday from 10:30 to 20:00. From 26 October to 29 March the cathedral closes at 18:30 on these days, and from 30 March to 30 May at 19:30. On Saturdays it is open from 10:30 to 18:00, on Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00, with last entry 45 minutes before closing in each case (as of September 2026).

The roof tour takes you up a narrow spiral staircase of around 200 steps to a height of almost 50 m; backpacks and children carried in arms are not allowed (as of September 2026).

Museo de Málaga: free for EU citizens

EU citizens with proof of identity can visit the Museo de Málaga in the Palacio de la Aduana free of charge; everyone else pays €1.50 admission. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 09:00 to 21:00, and on Sundays and public holidays from 09:00 to 15:00 (as of September 2026).

Caminito del Rey: reservation only, rules since May 2026

The path lies in the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes protected area; from Málaga you drive via the A-357 for a good 50 minutes (59.1 km). You walk in one direction only, from Ardales in the north to El Chorro in the south: 7.7 km including the approach paths, in three to four hours. The suspension bridge hangs 105 m high.

The rules of use apply in the version of a decree of 6 May 2026. You can only get in with a ticket reserved in advance on the official website: €10, or €18 with an official guided tour (as of September 2026). After purchase, you assign each ticket to one name in your account. Exchange and refunds are excluded; if the path is closed because of the weather, you can rebook subject to availability.

It is open Tuesday to Sunday, with entry from 09:00 until 14:50 or 17:20 depending on the season. You must be at the entrance 30 minutes before your time, and from the car park in Ardales it is a 20 to 35 minute walk there. Children under 8 are not allowed in; flip-flops, heeled shoes, pets and sticks, even walking poles, are also prohibited (as of September 2026). On the walkways you always keep to the right.

Parking at the visitor centre costs €2 per day (as of September 2026). By train you only get as far as El Chorro–Caminito del Rey station at the southern end; on weekdays five trains run there from Málaga and six back.

Tip

Caminito del Rey: pay for the shuttle online

You can pay for the shuttle bus between the south and north entrances (€2.50 per person per day) online together with the ticket. On the bus only cash is accepted; cards are not taken (as of September 2026).

Alhambra in Granada: tickets in your name, fixed palace slot

The Alhambra and Generalife have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, and the Albaicín was added in 1994. From 1 April to 14 October it is open daily from 08:30 to 20:00, from 15 October to 31 March until 18:00. The day ticket costs €22.27 according to the ordinance of 17 July 2025, plus a service fee online (as of September 2026).

Advance sales are online, by phone and at ticket machines until 23:59 the day before; on site only tickets for the same day are sold. Children under 12 pay nothing, but you book their ticket together with the others (as of September 2026).

Caution

Alhambra: palaces only in your booked time slot

The tickets carry your name and are not transferable, so take your original ID with you. You can only enter the Nasrid Palaces in the time slot you booked, with at most 300 people per half hour. If you miss it, you lose the palace visit, and a ticket you have bought cannot be rebooked for another day or another time (as of September 2026).

Tip

Alhambra: check sold-out days again later

A sold-out day can get tickets again later. The reason: places from quotas for school and other programmes that nobody claims sometimes end up in the official sale afterwards (as of September 2026).

Ronda: Puente Nuevo and Bono Turístico

The 98 m high Puente Nuevo in Ronda was built from 1751 to 1793. The first bridge, built in 1735, lasted only six years, and about 50 people died when it collapsed. Today an information centre inside the bridge explains its construction, nature and history. The town's Bono Turístico for €12, concessions €9, is valid there, at the Casa del Gigante, the Arab Baths and the Palacio de Mondragón (as of September 2026).

Cueva de Nerja and the Antequera Dolmens

From Málaga it is around 58 km to the Cueva de Nerja, about 48 minutes via the A-7; Alsa buses stop at “Nerja (Cuevas)”. The stalactite cave was discovered in 1959 by five teenagers and opened in 1960. It is usually open from 09:15 to 16:30, from June to September and at Christmas, Easter and on bridging days between public holidays and weekends until 17:30, with last entry one hour earlier in each case (as of September 2026). The cave ticket is also valid for the Museo de Nerja.

Since 2016 the Antequera Dolmens have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The burial monuments Menga, Viera and El Romeral are protected, as are two mountains as natural monuments, the Peña de los Enamorados and El Torcal.

Practical information

Local transport: city bus, metro and combined ticket

A journey on the EMT city bus costs €1.40, or €0.50 per journey with the Tarjeta Transbordo for ten journeys, transfers included. Children up to and including the age of 14 travel free with a free card (all valid in 2026). The rechargeable combined ticket (Consorcio) costs a €1.50 issuing fee. It is valid on the consortium's intercity buses, on local trains, the metro and, among others, the city buses of Málaga, Benalmádena and Torremolinos (as of September 2026). With it the city bus costs €0.83, the metro €0.49 and the intercity bus at the lowest fare band €0.62 instead of €1.60 in cash (valid 15 Jul–31 Dec 2026).

Money, time, emergency number

You pay in euros, and Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. Tipping is voluntary but usual in restaurants, bars, hotels and taxis, mostly 5 to 10% of the bill. Cards are sometimes only accepted from around €10 (as of September 2026).

On the mainland the time is the same as in Germany, and restaurants usually serve dinner from 20:00 to 23:30. The sockets have round pins to the European standard, and with an EU mobile contract you surf at the normal rate. The emergency number 112 is free and connects interpreters in several languages.

The current rules on entry, safety and health are given by the German Foreign Office.

Who this is not for

  • Anyone expecting beach weather in winter: from December to February the mean daily high is between 16.8 and 17.7 °C, and in November and December 100 mm of rain falls in each.
  • Anyone who handles heat badly: in July and August the mean daily high is 30.5 and 30.8 °C, the low 20.5 and 21.1 °C.
  • Anyone who wants to get beyond Fuengirola without a car: the C1 ends there, Marbella has no railway station, and only five trains run to the Caminito del Rey on weekdays.
  • Anyone who wants to plan spontaneously: Alhambra tickets carry your name, and the day and time cannot be changed after purchase. At the Caminito del Rey there are only tickets reserved in advance, with no refunds.
  • Anyone who wants to drive into the centre: Málaga's low-emission zone covers 404 hectares and is monitored by number plate recognition.
  • Anyone who wants to hike with children under 8: they are not allowed on the Caminito del Rey.
