The Algarve suits you if you want to combine rocky coves, island beaches in front of a lagoon and towns like Lagos or Tavira in one trip. A regional train runs from Lagos via Faro to Vila Real de Santo António. To the rocky coast near Benagil, by contrast, the scheduled bus runs only twice, Monday to Friday (timetable since 1 May 2022).

Advice from the German Federal Foreign Office

Because of several forest fires and unusually high temperatures, the German Foreign Office says the forest-fire alert level applies to the whole of mainland Portugal, but not to Madeira and the Azores. This means that fire and smoking bans apply, campfires and fireworks are prohibited, and you may not enter certain wooded areas. Follow the instructions of the fire brigade and the authorities; the Fogos map shows current fires.

AI-generated summary of the German Federal Foreign Office’s travel and safety advice for Portugal, version of 29 July 2026. It simplifies and may be incomplete: before you travel, also read the Foreign Office’s original text (in German).

New for 2026: For the bathing season, the Portimão harbour authority is not issuing licences to excursion boats that bring guests to beaches without a footpath in Lagoa and Albufeira. Since 19 July the regional train has run to a new timetable and fare. The A22 motorway has been toll-free since 1 January 2025.

The Algarve suits you less if you tolerate heat poorly and can only travel in July or August: then Faro reaches a good 29 °C on average by day. In December, the wettest month, an average of 90 mm of rain falls there (normals 1991–2020).

Getting there and from the airport into town

In 2025 Faro ranked 40th among all foreign destinations from the main German airports, with 635,326 passengers. Among destinations in Portugal, only Lisbon and Porto had more passengers from Germany. The largest group departed from Frankfurt, closely followed by Düsseldorf. July was the strongest month with 76,009 passengers, January the weakest with 21,712 (Federal Statistical Office, year 2025; breakdown by country, airport and month: our own analysis).

Faro airport: no railway station, taxi averages €10

Trains do not stop at the airport; the station is in the centre of Faro. You can get a taxi at any time of day, and as a rule no more than four passengers fit in. The airport operator ANA gives €10.00 as the average price into town, and luggage over 55 × 35 × 20 cm costs extra (as of September 2026).

City bus 16: to the bus station in 15 to 19 minutes

Próximo Line 16 runs from the bus station (Terminal Rodoviário) in the centre via the airport on to Praia de Faro. In the direction of the airport, the first bus leaves the bus station at 5:00 and the last at 23:45. Outside summer there are 26 journeys in each direction from Monday to Friday and 22 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (timetable since 18 August 2026, our own analysis).

On Line 16 you buy the “Bilhete linha” ticket on the bus for €2.85; according to the Próximo tariff it is valid on the whole line as far as Praia de Faro (as of September 2026).

Tip

Bus 16: €2.85 instead of an average €10 for a taxi

From Faro airport in the Algarve, city bus 16 takes you into the centre daily from 5:20 to 0:10 in 15 to 19 minutes (timetable since 18 August 2026). On the bus you pay €2.85 for this, while a taxi costs on average €10 according to the airport operator (as of September 2026). For four people the bus costs €11.40 in total, whereas for a taxi a surcharge for large luggage comes on top.

Aerobus: direct to Albufeira, Portimão and Lagos

The Aerobus, Vamus Line 56, runs from Faro bus station via the airport to Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos. From 1 May to 31 October it leaves the airport eight times a day between 8:30 and 20:15, and the last bus ends in Portimão (timetable since 9 September 2024). It takes 40 to 45 minutes to Albufeira and just under two hours to Lagos (our own analysis).

A single from the airport costs €11 to Albufeira, €13 to Lagoa, €14 to Portimão and €17 to Lagos. A return costs 20 per cent less (fare since 1 January 2026).

Caution

Aerobus: from 1 November only two or three departures from the airport

After 31 October 2026, only the buses at 11:15, 18:15 and 20:15 leave the airport from Monday to Friday. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays there are only those at 11:15 and 18:15. You can then get directly to Lagos only at 11:15 or 18:15, and from Lagos to the airport at 6:00 or 14:30 (timetable since 9 September 2024, our own analysis). According to Vamus, the next high season begins on 1 May 2027.

Regional train: from Lagos to Vila Real de Santo António

The Linha do Algarve of the railway operator CP connects Lagos via Portimão, Silves, Albufeira-Ferreiras, Loulé, Faro and Tavira with Vila Real de Santo António (timetable since 19 July 2026). From Faro to Lagos, ten trains run from Monday to Friday between 6:34 and 20:40. By regional train the journey takes 90 to 108 minutes, and the daily InterRegional at 10:36 does it in 77 minutes. Towards Vila Real de Santo António a train runs roughly hourly from Monday to Friday, and you reach Tavira in around 33 minutes (our own analysis).

A single costs €8.30 for Faro–Lagos, €3.80 for Faro–Albufeira and €3.60 for Faro–Tavira (fare since 19 July 2026). Children and seniors pay half on regional services. Bicycles travel free in marked carriages as long as there is space, with exceptions on individual trains and at certain times according to CP (as of September 2026).

Hire car: six desks at the airport

At the airport, Avis/Budget, Europcar, Goldcar, Guerin, Hertz and Sixt have desks, open from 6:00 or 7:00 until 23:00 or 24:00 (as of September 2026). The minimum age is 21 to 25 depending on the firm, and you must have held your driving licence for more than a year. In built-up areas the limit is 50, on country roads 90, on expressways 100 and on motorways 120 km/h. The alcohol limit is 0.5 g per litre of blood (as of September 2026).

Tip

A22: no toll device needed

The A22 motorway across the Algarve has been toll-free since 1 January 2025, as set out in Law No. 37/2024 of 7 August 2024. In a hire car you therefore need neither a toll device nor a prepaid card for it. The A2 from the direction of Lisbon, on the other hand, has toll stations, where you pay in cash or by bank card (as of September 2026).

Sights: opening times, prices and rules in 2026

Ponta da Piedade near Lagos

Boatmen who set off from the sea below take you to the caves of Ponta da Piedade. You get down via a long staircase near the lighthouse, which has been in operation since 1913. In popular speech the Miocene rocks bear names such as “a balança” (the scales) or “o sapato” (the shoe). The town calls the coves from Praia da Batata to the headland “Costa d’Oiro”, because of the colour of their rocks.

Benagil caves: harbour authority rules

Separate rules of the Portimão harbour authority have applied since 13 August 2024 to the Benagil caves between Praia do Vale do Lapa and Praia de Albandeira. They affect everyone who moves within the 500 m zone off the coast there. The life jacket stays on throughout the tour, and near rockfall zones a helmet is required as well. Between sunset and sunrise and with visibility under 1,000 m, entry is prohibited, as is diving in the caves.

A motor boat may stay 2 minutes in the cave, and a group of six kayaks or SUPs with a guide at most 8 minutes. An amendment of 2 July 2025 raised the number of boats allowed in at the same time: five motor boats instead of three, and 14 kayaks or SUPs instead of seven.

Caution

Benagil cave: do not land, do not swim in

On the sandy beach in the cave you may neither go ashore nor bathe. Swimming in is also taboo, with or without a swimming aid. Kayak and SUP tours are allowed here only with a guide, and that applies to rented boats as well. Private individuals without a life jacket risk a fine of €25 to €20,000 (as of September 2026).

The harbour authority classes the cave beach entirely as a rockfall danger zone. For the 2026 bathing season, excursion boats that bring guests to beaches without a footpath in Lagoa and Albufeira no longer receive a licence (Edital of 26 January 2026). The authority gives shrinking areas of sand, which lie partly or entirely within the rockfall zone of the cliffs, as the reason.

Praia da Marinha and the Sete Vales Suspensos cliff path

The “Sete Vales Suspensos” hiking trail in Lagoa follows the cliffs for 5.7 km, from Praia de Vale Centeanes to Praia da Marinha. You can reach Praia da Marinha by scheduled bus only from Monday to Friday. Vamus Line 77 leaves Lagoa at 9:45 and 14:45 and runs via Praia da Marinha to Benagil (timetable since 1 May 2022).

Sagres: fortress and Cabo de São Vicente

The fortress of Sagres is open daily from 9:30 to 17:30, last admission is at 17:00, and admission costs €10.00 (as of September 2026). It is closed on 1 and 22 January, on Easter Sunday, on 1 May and on 25 December. In 1443 Henry the Navigator received permission to build the “Vila do Infante” on the cape. Little of it remains, such as the “Rosa dos Ventos”, uncovered by chance in 1921.

You cannot currently visit the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente, and no date has been set for its reopening (as of September 2026). From Lagos, Vamus Line 47 runs to Sagres nine times from Monday to Friday, or eight times in the school holidays, mostly in around an hour. Three journeys continue to the cape, leaving Lagos at 10:00, 13:45 and 15:15. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays five buses run until 31 October, then four until the end of April, of which two go to the cape (timetable since 9 September 2024, our own analysis).

Ria Formosa: lagoon and islands off Faro

Around 18,000 hectares, water included, belong to the Ria Formosa natural park; it extends across Faro, Loulé, Olhão, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. It was founded on 9 December 1987. Barrier islands shield the lagoon from the open sea, from the Ancão peninsula with Praia de Faro to the Cacela peninsula.

According to the town, the boats to the islands leave from Cais das Portas do Mar, more often in summer than otherwise (as of 28 September 2026). The ferry to Ilha do Farol takes around 40 minutes. From 16 September to 31 October 2026 it leaves Faro at 8:30, 10:35, 14:45 and 16:45, and the last return is at 18:00. The town has not yet published a timetable from November (as of September 2026).

To Ilha Deserta, the operator Animaris runs, depending on the weather, a ferry in 45 minutes for €5 one way, and a shuttle does it in 15 minutes for €10 one way (as of 23 February 2026).

Tip

Ferry to Ilha do Farol: €6.15 return

The ferry from Faro to Ilha do Farol costs €6.15 return, or €3.00 for children aged 4 to 11 (2026 timetable). The published timetable runs until 31 October 2026.

Tavira: Ponte Antiga and island beaches

Seven arches carry the Ponte Antiga over the Rio Gilão; it is a good 80 m long and today for pedestrians only. More recent studies can only date the bridge back to the Middle Ages, although it was long regarded as Roman.

The Mediterranean diet has been on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage since 2010, and Portugal has been part of it since 2013, with Tavira as a representative municipality.

You cross to Praia da Ilha de Tavira from Tavira, from Quatro Águas or by water taxi; the beach is lifeguarded and flies the Blue Flag. To Praia do Barril you walk from Santa Luzia over a footbridge, then 1 km on foot or by a small train (as of September 2026).

Silves castle: open until 18:00 in winter

Silves castle is open daily except on 25 December and 1 January. From October to April it is open from 9:00 to 18:00, and from May to September until 20:00. Last admission is half an hour before closing (as of September 2026).

Lagos and Tavira list no tourist tax in their bylaw directories. For Vila do Bispo with Sagres, information is missing (as of September 2026). Two adults pay €28 for a week in Portimão in October, and €14 from 1 November (our own calculation).

Practical information

Regional buses from Vamus

Vamus lists 72 bus lines in the Algarve on its website (our own count, as of 26 September 2026). Single journeys are priced by distance; up to 2 km they cost €1.25 or €2.85, depending on the line. With the “Pré-Pago” prepaid card for €2.00 or via the app you save up to 50 per cent on the single ticket (fares since 1 January 2026).

Money, time, emergencies

You pay in euros, and ATMs of the “MB” (Multibanco) and “ATM” networks work around the clock. In the Algarve the clocks run one hour behind German time all year. You can reach the emergency number 112 free of charge, and with an EU mobile contract you can call without a roaming surcharge. Dinner is usually eaten between 19:30 and 22:30, and a tip of 5 to 10 per cent is customary even though service is included in the price. National public holidays in the rest of 2026 are 5 October, 1 November, and 1, 8 and 25 December (as of September 2026).

The applicable rules on entry, safety and health can be found at the German Foreign Office.

The rules that apply are published by the German Federal Foreign Office — always up to date there.

Who this is not for

  • Anyone who tolerates heat poorly and can only travel in July or August: Faro then reaches a good 29 °C on average by day, and 30 °C on 12 to 13 days a month.
  • Anyone who wants to explore the rocky coast without a car: The bus to Benagil runs only twice, Monday to Friday, and to Cabo de São Vicente at most three times a day.
  • Anyone who wants to swim into the Benagil cave or land there: Both are prohibited, and kayak tours are only available with a guide.
  • Anyone who wants to reach beaches without a footpath by boat: In Lagoa and Albufeira the harbour authority is issuing no licences for this for the 2026 bathing season.
  • Anyone looking for swimming weather in winter: In December Faro gets an average of 90 mm of rain, and daytime highs reach 17.1 °C.
  • Anyone on a tight budget: In Faro, Albufeira, Portimão, Lagoa and Loulé up to €2 tourist tax per person and night comes on top, and the Aerobus to Lagos costs €17.
