At a glance

  • 807,822 passengers flew from Germany to Pristina in 2025, ranking 29th among 211 destination countries; most departed from Düsseldorf and Stuttgart (Federal Statistical Office, our own analysis).
  • Airport bus 1A: every two hours daily between the airport and Pristina bus station, €5 digital, €6 on paper (timetable July 2026, price as of September 2026).
  • Train Pristina–Peja: twice daily in each direction, about two hours, €3 (Trainkos, timetable 2026, price as of September 2026).
  • Your own car: the Green Card is not valid; border insurance for a car costs €15 for 15 days (as of September 2026).
  • Prizren fortress: only partly open since 7 September 2026 after emergency work; no date for full reopening.
  • You pay in euros; take a credit card, as the Girocard does not work according to ADAC (as of September 2026).

Kosovo suits you if you want to combine medieval monasteries, old mosques and mountain tours on one trip. Dečani Monastery has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, and three more churches and monasteries were added in 2006; together they are called “Medieval Monuments in Kosovo”. In the Rugova Gorge near Peja there are via ferrata routes. You pay in euros, and the time is the same as in Germany.

Some things are new in 2026. After emergency work, Prizren fortress has been only partly accessible since 7 September. In Pristina, entry into the centre remains free of charge for cars up to 3.5 t according to the decision of 25 September. In addition, in February the European Commission proposed negotiations to bring Kosovo and the other Western Balkan countries into roaming without surcharges.

Kosovo is less suitable if you are looking for a beach, as the country has no coast. Winters are cold: in Pristina the average daily maximum in January is 2.4 °C (1961–1990 average).

Advice from the German Federal Foreign Office

Following the verdict delivered on 16 September 2026 before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague, the German Foreign Office expects further protests and rallies. It describes the situation in the north of Kosovo as stable in principle, but short-notice changes are possible, and individual border crossings to Serbia may close depending on events. For travel to the north (the municipalities of Zubin Potok, Leposavić, Zvečan and North Mitrovica), the office advises particular caution. According to the office, you should keep well away from demonstrations and crowds.

Getting there from Germany

In 2025, 807,822 passengers flew from the 22 main German airports to Kosovo, all of them to Pristina (PRN), ranking 29th among 211 destination countries. Most departed from Düsseldorf (191,463), Stuttgart (186,972), Munich (120,347) and Memmingen (78,373). Counted are boarding passengers in Germany with Pristina as their last known destination, excluding transfer passengers abroad (Federal Statistical Office, year 2025; total and rank: our own analysis).

Flights run all year: even in the weakest month, September, there were over 53,000 passengers in 2025, and 87,780 in July. In July 2026 the office counted 93,697 passengers to Pristina, more than in any month since January 2025 (our own analysis).

From Pristina airport to the centre

According to Peja tourist information, it is 10 km from Adem Jashari Airport to Pristina and 70 km to Peja. Trafiku Urban's city bus line 1A shuttles to Pristina bus station, among other places via Fushë Kosova. From the bus station it runs daily on the odd hour from 7:00 to 23:00, from the airport on the even hour from 8:00 to 24:00 (timetable July 2026). The timetable gives no journey time, and children up to 7 years travel free (as of September 2026).

According to the operator, taxis are available at the airport around the clock (as of December 2024); the sources we evaluated give no fare. For Peja, take the 1A to the bus station; from platform 1 there, a bus continues about every 40 minutes during the day (as of September 2026).

Tip

Airport bus 1A: €5 digital instead of €6

From Pristina airport in Kosovo, bus line 1A goes to the capital's bus station, leaving the airport every two hours daily from 8:00 to 24:00 (timetable July 2026). Take the digital or SMS ticket: it costs €5 instead of €6 for the paper ticket (as of September 2026).

“—” means: no documented drawback.

In 2025 the Pristina region had the most hotel guests in the country, at 261,110. In the old town, west of the Kosovo Museum, stands the Çarshi Mosque from the early 15th century. About 20 km outside, near Mramor, FOUR PAWS keeps rescued brown bears on 16 hectares. The bear sanctuary is open from April to October from 10:00 to 19:00, and from November to March until 16:00 (as of September 2026).

After Pristina, the Prizren region had the most foreign hotel guests in 2025 (113,373). Sofi Sinan Pasha had the Sinan Pasha Mosque built there in 1615. The stone bridge in the old town is dated to the late 15th or early 16th century; after a flood in November 1979 it was rebuilt and inaugurated in 1982. Every year the town hosts the DokuFest film festival, in 2026 from 7 to 15 August.

The fortress towers over the town from a hill in the east. It served as a defensive structure until 1912, and since 2019 it has housed an archaeological exhibition. From 24 August to 7 September 2026 it was closed for emergency work and has been partly open since. According to the newspaper KOHA, it is not known when all parts will open; the paper sees years of neglected maintenance as the reason for the closures (as of 9 September 2026).

Peja lies in the west on the border with Montenegro; in 2025 the region had the most hotel nights in the country, at 607,127. Only 2 km from the centre opens the 12 km Rugova Gorge with rock faces up to 1,000 m high, a protected natural monument since 1988. You can hire bikes and via ferrata equipment at the visitor centre at the entrance to the gorge, in summer daily from 9:00 to 18:00, in winter from 10:00 to 16:00 (as of September 2026). The “Marimangat” via ferrata is 1,000 m long, has difficulty grade C and takes 3 to 4 hours.

The long-distance trail “Peaks of the Balkans” connects Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro over 192 km and climbs to 2,300 m. For its 10 stages, Peja tourist information allows 10 to 12 days. Because of uninhabited sections, it advises going in a group or with a guide.

Visoki Dečani Monastery near Deçan is the burial place of the Serbian king Stefan Dečanski and dates from the mid-14th century. Like the Patriarchate of Peć, Gračanica and the Ljeviša church in Prizren, it has been on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2006. The sources we evaluated give no opening times or admission prices for the monasteries.

Getting around the country

Train and bus

The railway company Trainkos runs on three routes: Pristina–Peja, Fushë Kosova–Hani i Elezit, the border town with North Macedonia, and Pristina–Skopje. In 2026 a train to Skopje leaves at 7:10 (arriving 9:52), and the return is at 16:30 (arriving 19:10, timetable 2026).

Tip

Train to Peja: about two hours for €3

In 2026 Trainkos runs twice daily from Pristina to Peja, at 7:50 (arriving 9:53) and at 16:30 (arriving 18:29). In the opposite direction the train leaves at 5:32 and at 12:10. The ticket costs €3, and from Peja station it is about a 15-minute walk to the centre (timetable 2026, price as of September 2026).

Pristina bus station on Rruga Bill Clinton is in operation from 6:00 to 22:00. According to its price list, a one-way trip to Skopje costs €5.50 to €7.50, and to Tirana €15.50 with most companies (as of September 2026). The list gives no domestic prices.

Tip

Pristina city bus: day pass worthwhile from two journeys

A city bus journey in Pristina costs €0.60 digitally or by SMS, and €0.80 on paper. The digital day pass for €1.00 is therefore already cheaper from two journeys (our own calculation); on paper it costs €1.20 (as of September 2026).

Car and roads

Car hire at Pristina Airport (PRN)Latest price sample for each car class and rental company, plus the search for your travel dates.

According to the British motoring club RAC, the limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h outside them and 130 km/h on motorways. The blood alcohol limit is 0.01%, so practically zero. Seat belts are compulsory in all seats, and anyone under 12 belongs in the back seat (as of September 2026). Away from the good main roads the RAC advises caution: country roads are partly in a poor state, and landslides and floods threaten after storms.

In Pristina, parking usually has to be paid for. Under the fee schedule of 25 September 2026, cars up to 3.5 t pay no charge for entering the centre; €2 per day had previously been proposed.

Caution

Green Card not valid: car border insurance from €15

Your Green Card is no use at the Kosovo border, as the country is not part of that insurance system. With a car registered in Germany you therefore need border insurance. For a car it costs €15 for 15 days or €20 for a month, and for a motorcycle €10 for 15 days (as of September 2026). You can take it out around the clock at the border crossings or beforehand online from the insurance bureau BKS.

Money and costs

Without an agreement with the EU and outside the eurozone, Kosovo pays in euros; shops do not accept other currencies. Take a credit card with you: many restaurants, larger shops and ATMs accept it. According to ADAC, the Girocard is no help either for paying or for withdrawing cash. Banks are open from 8:00 to 17:30 (as of September 2026).

In May 2026 Pristina proposed a tourist tax of €1 per night (draft). Whether it is in the fee schedule adopted on 25 September cannot be seen from the reports. We found no nationwide tourist tax in the sources we evaluated.

Practical information

Clocks in Kosovo run the same as in Germany all year round. Albanian and Serbian are official languages nationwide; at municipal level Bosnian, Romani and Turkish also have this status. The country calling code is +383, the free emergency number is 112, and you report crimes to the police on 192 (as of September 2026).

The EU rule “Roam like at home” does not apply in Kosovo; there are only voluntary, cheaper offers from individual mobile operators (as of February 2026). So check your plan before the trip. Of the twelve days off in 2026, only 25 December is still to come. In 2026 the country made up for public holidays falling on a weekend on the following Monday.

What applies to entry, safety and health is always up to date at the German Foreign Office.

Who Kosovo is not for

  • If you are looking for a beach: Kosovo has no coast; for the sea you have to go to a neighbouring country.
  • If you want mild weather in winter: In Pristina the average daily maximum in January is 2.4 °C, and there are around 101 frost days a year (1961–1990).
  • If you rely on trains and the airport bus: Two trains a day run to Peja and one to Skopje, and the airport bus only comes every two hours (timetables 2026).
  • If you want little hassle with your own car: The Green Card is not valid, at least €15 of border insurance comes on top, and country roads are partly poor.
  • If you want to see Prizren fortress in full: Since 7 September 2026 it has been only partly open, and no date for full reopening has been given.
  • If you surf a lot on your phone while travelling: The EU rule “Roam like at home” does not apply in Kosovo (as of February 2026).
