Vienna suits city-break travellers who are looking for palaces, art museums and coffee houses. The historic centre and Schönbrunn Palace are two separate UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the Upper Belvedere holds the world's largest collection of Klimt paintings. Because of a rail closure, no train runs from the airport to Wien Mitte until the end of October 2027, which is why getting there comes first.
Getting there and from the airport into the city
Between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof no train runs on the S-Bahn main trunk line from 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027, which also removes the stops at Wien Mitte and Rennweg. You still get quickly from Vienna Airport (VIE) into the centre. The “At a glance” box shows the straight-line distance and journey time according to the transfer provider; the table gives prices for adults (as of September 2026).
| Connection | Destination in Vienna | Journey time | Single fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| ÖBB Railjet or Intercity | Hauptbahnhof (U1) | approx. 15 min. | €5.50 |
| REX7 | Hauptbahnhof (U1) | approx. 20 min. | €5.50 |
| S7 | St. Marx, change there | approx. 18 min. | €5.50 |
| CAT as a bus | Wien Mitte/Landstraße (U3, U4) | approx. 21 min. | €14.90 |
| Vienna Airport Bus | five lines, e.g. Karlsplatz | approx. 22 to 40 min. | €11 |

Caution
No train to Wien Mitte until the end of October 2027
The S7 ends at St. Marx, and the CAT runs as a bus. The city and the tourism office advise allowing a time buffer and checking the connection before departure, for example at wien.info (opens in a new tab).
Rail: ÖBB Railjets and Intercitys run twice an hour non-stop to the Hauptbahnhof, where the U1 stops. The REX7 stops at Schwechat and Kaiserebersdorf along the way. During the closure the S7 ends at St. Marx outside the centre, where you change to tram 18 towards the Hauptbahnhof, tram 71 towards Karlsplatz or bus 74A to Landstraße with U3 and U4. The rail ticket is made up of €2.30 to the city boundary and €3.20 for the core zone; children aged 6 to 14 pay €2.80.
CAT: The City Airport Train runs as a bus until probably 31 October 2027 to the stop Marxergasse 1b near Wien Mitte/Landstraße. From 07:00 to 19:00 it runs every 12 minutes, otherwise every 15, and the last one leaves the airport at 23:37 (as of September 2026). Children under 15 travel free, students pay half, and the City Check-in for luggage is not available while the bus is in operation. From Wien Mitte it is a 12 to 15 minute walk to Stephansplatz.
Vienna Airport Bus: Five lines have run since 5 September 2026. VAB1 goes to the Hauptbahnhof and Westbahnhof (around 40 minutes), VAB2 to Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz (22), VAB3 to Kaisermühlen VIC and to the Donauzentrum, VAB4 to Karlsplatz (26) and VAB5 to Praterstern (28). You can only pay in cash to the driver; otherwise pay online or at machines at the airport and at Westbahnhof.
Tip
With a multi-day pass only €2.30 extra
Tickets for the core zone are not valid as far as the airport. With a Vienna multi-day pass such as the 7-day ticket, or with the Vienna City Card, you only need the supplementary ticket for €2.30 to the city boundary for the S7, REX7 and Railjet. CAT and Airport Bus need their own tickets; they are included only in the Vienna City Card with Airport Transfer.
Where to stay: the neighbourhoods compared
Vienna has 23 districts on 415 square kilometres. For a city break, five come into question above all, close to the major sights or to a direct airport bus.
| District | Location | Suits | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Innere Stadt | World Heritage core zone around St Stephen's Cathedral (U1, U3) | a first visit with little time | CAT bus stops at Wien Mitte, from there 12 to 15 min. on foot to the cathedral |
| 2. Leopoldstadt | Karmeliter and Stuwer quarters, Praterstern (U1, U2) | Prater, Hauptallee, trade fair | airport bus VAB5 from Praterstern |
| 4. Wieden | Freihaus quarter near Karlsplatz and Naschmarkt | galleries, bars, second-hand shops | airport bus VAB4 from Karlsplatz |
| 6. Mariahilf | Mariahilfer Straße, Naschmarkt | shopping, market | Naschmarkt stalls closed on Sundays |
| 7. Neubau | Neubaugasse, Spittelberg next to the MuseumsQuartier | small shops, eateries | Christmas market at Spittelberg in Advent |
Swipe the table sideways to see all columns.
The Karmeliterviertel around the Karmelitermarkt is a centre of Jewish life with kosher shops and bakeries; the whole 2nd district used to be called “Mazzesinsel”. The Stuwerviertel begins at Praterstern, has traffic-calmed streets and the Vorgartenmarkt and is close to the Prater and the trade fair.
In the Freihausviertel “The Magic Flute” premiered in 1791; today Gründerzeit buildings and galleries characterise the quarter, and there is also a Third Man Museum. Mariahilfer Straße is the big shopping street with chain stores; in its side street Neubaugasse, small shops predominate. At Spittelberg, between Breite Gasse and Sigmundsgasse, there are eateries in Biedermeier lanes, with pavement terraces (Schanigärten) in summer.
Sights by area
Plan three full days for the six areas. The Palace Ticket at Schönbrunn alone is designed for around 75 minutes, the Imperial Apartments of the Hofburg for around 60 minutes.
Innere Stadt: St Stephen's Cathedral and the World Heritage core
Almost the whole 1st district belongs to the World Heritage core zone of around 371 hectares with about 1,600 objects, inscribed on 13 December 2001. Because of a high-rise project at Heumarkt, the centre was on the Red List of endangered World Heritage from 2017 to July 2026. On 27 July 2026 the World Heritage Committee removed it from that list.
Already from Stephansplatz, the roof of coloured tiles with the double eagle on St Stephen's Cathedral (U1, U3) catches the eye. If you want to go up, you climb 343 steps to the Türmerstube (watchman's room) in the 136-metre South Tower, which makes the cathedral the tallest church in Austria. The Pummerin hangs in the North Tower; among Europe's freely swinging church bells only one is larger.
You can get into the catacombs on a guided tour. Tourist visits are possible Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 11:30 and 13:00 to 16:30, on Sundays and public holidays from 13:00 to 16:30 (as of September 2026).

Hofburg and MuseumsQuartier
From Heldenplatz you see the Neue Burg, the youngest part of the Hofburg. The oldest, the Swiss Wing, you enter through the red-and-black Swiss Gate. For more than 700 years the Habsburgs' centre of power was here, and today the Federal President holds office in the Leopold Wing. From mid-September to the end of June the Vienna Boys' Choir sings at Mass on Sundays in the Gothic Hofburgkapelle, admission only with a ticket.
The Imperial Apartments and the Sisi Museum have their entrance under the Michaelerkuppel, and the nearest station is U3 Herrengasse. Normally they open daily from 09:00 to 17:30; the ticket costs €20, with a guided tour €25 (as of September 2026).
From 6 October to 18 November, according to the museum, the last phase of conversion work is under way, and the Sisi Museum is then closed. The Imperial Apartments open during this time from 10:00 to 16:30, and the standard ticket costs 25 % less. From 19 November 2026 the museum changes its prices seasonally.
The MuseumsQuartier uses the former court stables, built to a design by Fischer von Erlach from 1725. Today more than 50 cultural institutions work there, including the Leopold Museum, mumok and Kunsthalle Wien. The courtyards are freely accessible at any time, and on the roof of the Leopold Museum is the viewing platform “MQ Libelle”.
Schönbrunn: palace, park and zoo
Schönbrunn Palace and Park have been a World Heritage Site in their own right since 1996, and you get there on the U4. The park with the Great Parterre, Neptune Fountain and Gloriette opens daily from 06:30, free of charge; you only need tickets for special areas such as the maze, the Palm House and the zoo. The zoo was founded in 1752 and is regarded as the oldest zoo in the world.
The State Apartments, with a tour of about 40 minutes, cost €30; the Palace Ticket for the whole bel étage with Maria Theresa's rooms costs €42 (as of September 2026). The Classic Pass with Gloriette, maze and gardens is available for €49 only until 2 November 2026. The palace opens daily from 08:30 to 17:30 until 2 November, then until 17:00; a timed-entry ticket saves you waiting time.
Belvedere: Baroque palaces and Klimt's “The Kiss”
Prince Eugene had the Belvedere built by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt as a summer residence, and the Upper Palace was finished in 1723. There, with 24 paintings, hangs the world's largest Klimt painting collection, including “The Kiss” of 1908/09 with gold leaf. The façade is reflected in the water basin in front of the Upper Belvedere.
Admission costs €23 as the current daily price, and is free under 19 (as of September 2026). You can only enter with a timed-entry ticket, and you book the time slot at no extra charge online or at the ticket desk on site. It is open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. Tram D stops at the Schloss Belvedere station; from the Hauptbahnhof it is a walk of about 15 minutes.

Prater: Riesenrad and Hauptallee
Admission to the Wurstelprater in the 2nd district is free, and the more than 250 attractions run daily from 15 March to 31 October. The Riesenrad of 1897 is the oldest surviving of its kind and reaches a height of 64.75 metres with 15 cars. A standard ticket costs €14.50 (as of September 2026); the wheel is known from “The Third Man” (1949) and “Before Sunrise” (1995).
The Hauptallee leads from Praterstern (U1, U2) for about 4.5 kilometres to the Lusthaus, lined by around 2,500 trees. From there paths lead through floodplain forest and meadows towards Freudenau, popular for walking, running and cycling.

Naschmarkt: market on the Wienzeile
The Naschmarkt on the Wienzeile in the 6th district has stood on this site since 1916, and about 130 stalls sell fruit, spices, fish and cheese. The stalls are closed on Sundays; all of them are reliably open Tuesday to Friday from 15:00 to 18:00 (as of June 2026). On Saturdays from 06:30 a flea market with about 400 vendors joins in near Kettenbrückengasse (as of September 2026).
Food and drink
Viennese coffee house culture has been on the Austrian inventory of UNESCO intangible cultural heritage since 2011, and a glass of water traditionally comes with the coffee. A Melange is an espresso lengthened slightly with water, with hot milk and milk foam. The typical venue for Viennese cuisine is the Beisl.
At the Heuriger you get wine from the proprietor's own vineyards, in Vienna mainly white wine. You recognise it by the bunch of pine branches (Föhrenbuschen) and the sign “Ausg'steckt”; smaller Heurige often open only seasonally.
Best time to visit
May and September are the most pleasant, with average daily maxima of 21.8 and 21.6 °C in the Innere Stadt. There is no rainy season; February is the driest.
| Month | average daily maximum | hours of sunshine |
|---|---|---|
| May | 21.8 °C | approx. 248 |
| July | 27.8 °C | approx. 274 |
| September | 21.6 °C | approx. 195 |
| November | 9.5 °C | approx. 70 |
| December | 4.8 °C | approx. 56 |

The figures are averages for the years 1991 to 2020 at the Wien Innere Stadt station (GeoSphere Austria). The station counts on average 27 hot days of 30 °C or more per year; at the beginning of August 2026 it recorded 40.4 °C. In winter temperatures are around 0 °C, and snow falls less often than in the rest of Austria.
Advent 2026: markets with confirmed dates
The Advent season generally runs from mid-November to Christmas. For 2026 these dates are confirmed (as of July and September 2026 respectively):
| Market | Period | Opening hours |

Swipe the table sideways to see all columns.
To get to Rathausplatz, take trams 1, 71 and D, the U2 to Rathaus or the U3 to Volkstheater. The markets at Maria-Theresien-Platz, on the Freyung, Am Hof, at Stephansplatz and at Karlsplatz do not yet have checked dates for 2026. Before Christmas, Eisstock lanes and punch stalls are set up in the MuseumsQuartier.
Costs
Hotel prices fluctuate greatly and are therefore not given here. What is fixed is the local tourist tax (Ortstaxe): since 1 July 2026 it is 5 % of the accommodation price excluding VAT and breakfast, and from 1 July 2027 then 8 % (as of July 2026).
| Item | Price (as of September 2026) |
|---|---|
| Single ticket Wiener Linien | €3.20 |
| 24-hour ticket | €10.20 |
| 7-day ticket digital / paper | €25.20 / €28.90 |
| Imperial Apartments with Sisi Museum | €20 |
| Schönbrunn, Palace Ticket | €42 |
| Upper Belvedere | €23 |
| Riesenrad | €14.50 |
Since 1 January 2026 there have been no 48- and 72-hour tickets from Wiener Linien. From three days, the 7-day ticket is cheaper than three 24-hour tickets, which together cost €30.60.
The Vienna City Card for 72 hours costs €37 and includes a 7-day ticket for public transport plus discounts at over 200 partners for 72 hours (as of September 2026). Compared with the paper 7-day ticket (€28.90) you pay €8.10 more for the discounts, compared with the digital one (€25.20) €11.80.
Tip
No admission fee
You can get into Schönbrunn Palace Park, the courtyards of the MuseumsQuartier, the grounds of the Wurstelprater and the Green Prater with the Hauptallee free of charge.
Practical information
German is spoken, you pay in euros, and the mains voltage is 230 volts. There is no time difference to Germany. You can get public transport tickets from machines in the U-Bahn stations, in most Trafiken (tobacconists) and in the WienMobil app.
A single ticket is valid for 80 minutes from validation; you may change, but not break your journey. Bought on the tram it costs €3.40, i.e. 20 cents more (as of September 2026). You validate time-based tickets before the journey at the blue validators, and checks are also carried out at U-Bahn exits. Digital single and short-term tickets are about 5 % cheaper than paper.
The five U-Bahn lines run from about 05:00 to 24:00, every 2 to 5 minutes during the day and continuously every 15 minutes on weekend nights. Children under 6 travel free, children under 15 also on Sundays and public holidays and during the Vienna school holidays.
The current rules on entry and safety are available from the German Foreign Office.
